Diving & Snorkeling

Scuba Diving & Snorkeling Tobermory & The Bruce Peninsula

The North Bruce Peninsula offers some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in North America. This is not surprising, considering the amount of shipwrecks and natural underwater rock formations found in the waters of Georgian Bay and Lake Huron.

The Great Lakes, due to their size and nasty winter storms, house a good number of unfortunate ships in their depths. Remember the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (Gordon Lightfoot) in Lake Superior. Well, Lake Huron is no exception. And with the establishment of Fathom Five National Marine Park over 20 years ago, the wrecks are protected. Also with the absence of the boring worms found in salt water, these wooden wrecks have held up very well.

There are over 20 preserved Schooners, Steamers and Barges buried beneath the waves - . some dating back as early as 1852. For the divers interested in underwater geology, there is the famous flowerpot formations and underwater caves that are seen within the park. Further out - towards Manitoulin Island, a submerged waterfall can be found that marks some of the past history of the lakes during the Ice Age.

KNOW before you go

With the sheer cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment, limestone overhangs, and large caves that can be found both on the islands and submerged beneath the water, Tobermory is one of the best spots in Canada - if not the world for cold water diving. For the diving enthusiast, there are over 20 historical shipwrecks that lie beneath these clear, cold waters

  • Come prepared. The water can be cold any time of year.
  • If you are snorkeling, wear a swim shirt - it is cold, and the sun can be strong!
  • Respect the local rules.
  • Take nothing with you but memories and photos
  • The wrecks in Big Tub Harbour are frequented by the tour boats. Please respect them and move out of their way.
